Immigration And Health Care
One major challenge for newcomers is health care. People who arrive to this country through immigration often face special difficulties when seeking doctors and health care:
1) Language and cultural differences. Many people arriving here may have a hard time communicating with health care professionals for a number of reasons. The most obvious worry are language skills. Some newcomers simply are not confident enough in their language skills to seek medical help. Some also have misconceptions about medical care or have beliefs which do not encourage them to seek help. For many newcomers, it is useful to seek a doctor who speaks the same language. There are clinics and health professionals across the country who speak every nation on earth. Look for a doctor who speaks the same language; this can help improve communication (and therefore the quality of care) and can build trust as well.
2) Financial challenges. Many newcomers have a hard time affording medical insurance or medical care, which can be expensive. If you have a green card, you can find an employer who can help you secure medical insurance which can make health care affordable. You can also seek help through USCIS or a local immigration association. They may help you find an affordable source of care in your own community.
3) Status challenges and access challenges. If you have not sought legal immigration status through USCIS or do not have a green card, you may worry about seeking medical care. However, not seeking medical care can lead to complications and to severe problems. Speak to a trusted member of your church or community multicultural association to find a professional who can help.
4) Time challenges. Many people who seek green card renewal or other immigration status with the USCIS are working or going to school, wading through complex immigration forms, working on their English, and trying to adjust to life in a new country. Life is stressful and there is often not much time for additional activities. Some newcomers worry about missing work or school and falling behind. However, it is important not to put off medical help – it could cost you your health or your life.
It is important to seek good medical care whenever you need it. There are caring healthcare professionals out there who can help. There are clinics and hospitals who treat anyone, regardless of their ability to repay. Seek the help of an employer, local association, church, or immigration attorney to find the help you need.
